Don Quixot.jpg

All the wood engravings shown here were designed and cut in my final year as a design student, at my own expense, I might add, as the college faculty wouldn't pay for the expensive boxwood blocks.

Large blocks such as the first two shown here (150mm x 200mm) would now cost in excess of several hundred pounds.  In fact blocks that size are now almost impossible to obtain, there is a world shortage of high quality boxwood suitable for making end-grain blocks.

This is a later engraving.

Found this old boxwood block in a long abandoned cupboard in the arts faculty.

Blocks are often made up of small sections

skilfully joined together. I decided to go ahead and engrave despite that one section was beginning to part from it's neighbour.

If you look carefully you can see the fine line of separation caused by the wood drying out over many years in an old cupboard.
